Each OBI Journal has a theme and features articles of interest to the global Outward Bound community and its constituent groups including donors, board members, administrators and instructional staff. Articles that serve to promote or advertise new courses or routine promotional events are generally not accepted. Writers with questions about the suitability of their topic are encouraged to contact the editor.
OBI Journal covers a wide range of subjects, including exceptional Outward Bound programs, prominent alumni, innovative Outward Bound practitioners, issues of social relevance, and information from sources outside Outward Bound that would be of interest to readers. Article Preparation
Regular articles should be approximately 800 to 1200 words in length. Feature articles should be no more than 4000 words. Reference to additional resources for the reader is encouraged.
We have an accommodating editorial style; however, there are a few elements to keep in mind when preparing articles: 1) Headings are helpful in guiding readers and should be used where practicable. 2) The meaning of each sentence should be clear upon first reading, and each paragraph should advance a main idea and state it in the first sentence, and expand and iterate it at its conclusion. 3) A reasonable level of attention to correctness in grammar and usage is helpful. 4) The lay reader should be able to understand what is written without having to consult reference manuals. 5) Economy of expression. Steer clear of drawn-out oblique and passive expressions. 6) Objectivity. If an article is personal and includes first person experiences or recollections we prefer that the focus of the article be related to the journal's theme or an aspect of Outward Bound. In most of our articles, the writer is illuminating the topic rather than himself or herself.
Review Process
If an article is accepted it will be subject to editing for clarity and brevity. Every attempt is made preserve the letter and voice of the original article. Unless requested, edited articles will not be returned to the writer for their final approval.
