OBI ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

  1. Outward Bound International is the service organization for Outward Bound Schools worldwide.
  2. A Council with representatives from each licensed member school governs Outward Bound International. The Council has two classes of membership:
    • Ordinary Members are representatives of Licensed or Chartered Centers entitled to vote at annual general meetings.
    • Associate Members represent Provisional Licensed Centers and can participate in every respect, but are not entitled to vote.
  3. The Council appoints a 14-person Board of Directors. Additionally the Executive Director is an ex-officio member to conduct most of the business of OBI. The Board aims to have:
    • Four members from Europe and Africa
    • Four members from Asia and the Pacific
    • Four members from the Americas
    • Two members at large
    • The Executive Director (ex-officio)
    The Board Members pay their own expenses of meeting at least twice a year and participate in fund raising to meet the expenses of OBI. Nominations for Board membership are invited prior to each AGM.
  4. Outward Bound International currently has two staff with responsibilities as detailed in the following section.
  5. The Outward Bound Trust UK is the founding organization and owns the Outward Bound trade mark for which new licenses are issued.

    To enhance the risk management practice and educational quality of Outward Bound services worldwide and to protect the Outward Bound name.

THE OBJECTIVES AND CURRENT STRATEGIES FOR OBI ARE

  1. Help Outward Bound Centers achieve good risk management systems and program quality.
    • Conduct Program Reviews of all licensed Outward Bound centers regularly.
    • Train Program Review leaders through Train-the-Trainer programs.
    • Publish guidelines for risk management and program quality.
    • Terminate Licenses of any sub-standard centers unable to improve.
  2. Provide protection of the trademark and reputation.
    • Maintain Trademark registration in each country Outward Bound operates.
    • Monitor and defend Trademark against infringements.
  3. Help Outward Bound centers be successful.
    • Assist new OB centers acquire operational expertise.
    • Assist centers in need with business planning.
  4. Improve collaboration between Outward Bound centers
    • Help develop the international image and branding.
    • Fostering international programming.
    • Promoting international staff exchange.
    • Hosting International Conferences.
    • Sharing existing research. Encouraging new research
    • Encouraging writing on OB philosophy.
  5. Establish adequate, ongoing funding for OBI.
